Styles of Hearing Aids

All levels of hearing aid technology are available in the styles below.  Due to the physical characteristics of each style, there are certain advantages and disadvantages to be considered.  Some of the possible disadvantages (eg. increased likelihood to whistle) can be compensated for electronically with the higher level technology hearing aids, so use the following information as a guide only and discuss your needs and desires with the Audiologist.

  • Virtually invisible face-to-face and sideways.
  • Can be set up to allow the ear to remain open, with no “blocked up” feeling.
  • Allows you to hear what you can hear naturally, providing a supplement to your
    hearing by amplifying only the sounds which lack clarity.
  • Provide good aeration to the ear canal.
  • Less likely to whistle or block up with ear wax during use.

Mini - Behind the earMini BteMini Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aids
  • All the benefits of the micro behind-the-ear hearing aids (see above) in a larger package - ie. easier to handle for some people.
  • Larger battery size means less battery changes.

  • Very small hearing aids, almost invisible.
  • Can be trickier than other styles to put in the ear if you have difficulties with dexterity.
  • More likely than other styles to whistle if not inserted correctly.

  • Can be easier than other styles to insert and handle for some people
  • Slightly more visible than other styles when looking sideways at the ear.
